Christmas 2018: RCOK Annual Senior Citizen’s Christmas Treat

RCOK Love and Respect our Senior Citizens: “Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners.” (Laurence Sterne)

A signature Rotary Club of Kingston’s annual event, the Senior Citizens' Christmas Treat, took place on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at the Douglas Orane Auditorium, on the grounds of the Wolmer's Boys' High School.
The event emphasized that our Senior Citizens need to be honored and respected for all that they have done for us and for society and for their impact as role models.

The Rotary Club of Kingston chose to honor them through this event, where we hosted approximately seven hundred senior citizens,  from a wide cross-section of the Kingston Metropolitan Area, including: Golden Age Homes/Retirement Centres, Government Poor Relief Institutions, Saint Patricks Foundation, Saint Margaret's Human Resource Centre, Christ The Redeemer Human Resource Centre, Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Saint Monica's Home for the Elderly, Riverton City Human Resource Centre, Pretoria Road United Church, K.S.A.M.C. Poor Relief Department, and Denham Town Golden Age Home. We thank every institution named above, for going hand in hand with The Rotary Club of Kingston to ensure the event was a success.

A special thank you to our partners and sponsors, including Restaurants of Jamaica (KFC), Chicken Mistress Limited (Island Grill), WISYNCO Group, CornerTop Bottling Limited (Bullhead Water), and Caribbean Cream (Kremi Ice Cream).  We are truly appreciative of their collaboration.  Strong support also come from Rotarians, some of them going beyond the call of duty to help meet the budget for this event or in organizing and coordinating the transportation of the senior citizens.
The agenda included a tribute to our late Past President Deepak Vaswani. A commemorative plaque was awarded to his family in recognition of his lifelong service to the Rotary movement and dedication to this special event, which he helped to conceptualize.  Bethel Steel Band provided entertainment, and this prompted dancing and singalongs from the Seniors.

The Rotaract Club of Kingston and Interactors from various High Schools, including Holy Childhood High and the Wolmer's Group were in attendance. Their dedication and execution of assigned tasks helped in making the event a gratifying experience and we extend thank you.
In spreading the Christmas cheer, gift bags were given to all Senior Citizens in attendance.

“Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners.” (Laurence Sterne)

The RCOK Congratulates Past President Robert MacMillan
Congratulations to Past President of the RCOK Robert MacMillan on his selection to receive the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander on Heroes Day, October 15, 2018.

In an interview with the Gleaner’s romario.scott@gleanerjm.com, Past President MacMillan said "I think we need to  be more compassionate and loving to the needy. We need some compassion in this country. How we treat each other could improve a whole lot. That we get that right would be a good thing for me,".

Mr. MacMillan has been a committed Rotarian for many decades and the Rotary organisation has provided one of the conduits through which he gave back to society’s less fortunate. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Kingston from 1980 to 1981 and is a Paul Harris Fellow.  He has also made significant contribution to the Salvation Army, including serving on The Salvation Army's advisory board for more than 30 years, before later becoming Chairman.

Mr. MacMillan spent many years at the helm of MacMillan Advertising Limited, a business founded by his late father in 1929, and one which continue to have significant impact on commerce in Jamaica. In total, he has been in that business for at least 50 years.

"I am deeply honoured, and I am deeply touched to have received such an award. It is much appreciated," Mr. MacMillan told the Gleaner.

Bringing it closer to home, members of the RCOK thank PP Robert MacMillan for his contribution to the Rotary Club of Kingston and wish him many more years of continued success in all his endeavours.

RCOK Helping to Develop Youth
RCOK Works Closely with Interact and Rotaract Clubs

Rotary International and by extension the Rotary Club of Kingston place great emphasis on developing the kindness and social responsibility of young people in the society. The Rotary Club of Kingston is the sponsor of several Rotaract and Interact Clubs and its members continue to invest quality time and significant resources to help guide and mentor the young ones.

Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the ideal of Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of Kingston focuses on corporate area high schools. The participating students are required to complete a school, community, country or international project. They are also encouraged to interact with students from other clubs. By so doing, the young ones learn to act to make a difference. For those who commit and dedicate themselves to the movement, they eventually become the leaders in their schools and communities. Given the international connectivity of Interact Clubs, the youngsters can learn about new cultures and develop a better understanding of local and international issues affecting humanity, like the fight against polio and the necessity to care for the environment. Through the Interact Clubs, the young people can also have fun and make new friends from around the world.

The Rotary Club of Kingston sponsors eight (8) Interact Clubs - the Wolmers Girls School, Wolmers Boys School, Ardenne High School, Excelsior High School, Holy Childhood High School, Jamaica College, Kingston College and St Hughes High School for Girls. The genuine interest and positive energy of the students are contagious and have a positive influence on their peers in the respective schools. In the Rotary year just ended, several projects were executed including the Holy Childhood Interact Club’s visit to the Walkers Home of Safety, the St Hughes Interact Club’s staging of the Annual Christmas Treat at Albert Street Basic School and the Wolmers Girls Interact Club’s program to feed street people in Kingston.
During the 2017/18 Rotary Year, the Rotary Club of Kingston inducted approximately three hundred (300) new Interact members, which by itself was a very rewarding development.

Rotaract Clubs consist of young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years, who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities. The clubs have been active in assisting with many socially uplifting programs, inclusive of outreach to the old and indigent, care for the environment as well as working with children in need. Rotaractors often work side by side with Rotarians and are required to carry out projects and conduct their affairs like that of a Rotary Club. The sponsored Rotaract Clubs’ members assist to execute functions of the Rotary Club of Kingston as these events provide invaluable training. This was evident at the Rotary Club’s Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Treat in December 2017.

During the 2017-2018, the Rotary Club of Kingston also inducted several new Rotaract members. Many Rotaractors continue to become exemplary Rotarians after they have aged-out of their clubs.

One of the highlight for the youngsters was the holding of the 2017-2018 Interact President-elect Training Seminar (familiarly called PETS), at which leadership skills, family relationships, character values and ideas which make a club successful are expressed.  The 2017/18 event was held at the Wolmers Girls School Auditorium and was well supported by Interactors from all the associated clubs. This was followed by the 2017/18 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) held at the PCJ Building and which was also enthusiastically attended by both Interactors and Rotaractors.

The dedicated members of the Rotary Club of Kingston, lead by Past President Don Reynolds continue to coach and guide the youngsters of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs. The youngsters contribute positively and are making a difference to their schools, community and country.

Rotary Club of Kingston Wheelchair Donation Programme

A person with physical disabilities faces many challenges on a day-to-day basis and in Jamaica, the lack of wheelchairs remains one of the major contributing factors to mobility difficulties.

The Rotary Club of Kingston took the initiative to provide amenities and services to some of those with disabilities. On August 17, 2017 members of the RCOK provided one wheelchair to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Community Safety and Security Branch. It was a great opportunity to collaborate with the police force, to help improve mobility of policemen injured in the line of duty.

Rotarian Director Sarah Newland Martin
presents a wheelchair to Superintendent Velma Thomas-Gayle and Sgt. Johnathan Prince,
Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force

The Rotary Club of Kingston saw the needs at the Kingston Public Hospital and embarked on a programme to source wheelchairs for the institution during the 2017-18 Rotary year. Through the dedicated commitment of Director Sarah Newland- Martin and her hardworking team, a total of seven (7) wheelchairs were presented to the Hospital.

Directors Sarah & Heron led the handover of 3 wheelchairs to the
Chief Medical Officer of the Kingston Public Hospital, Dr.Hugh Wong, while Asst. DG Judy Hylton looks on

In accepting the donations at separate events, Dr. Wong and Dr. Whylie respectively expressed their gratitude to the RCOK and emphasised that there was a need for more wheelchairs throughout the hospital. They also said that an ongoing program was required to repair and maintain the existing wheelchairs at the hospital.

Being mobile enhances a person’s ability to learn, interact with others, earn a living and participate in the community. The members of the Rotary Club of Kingston get great satisfaction from providing increased comfort, mobility, independence and freedom to persons in need. Owning a wheelchair is not a luxury, but a means to boost the self-confidence, self-esteem, pride and independence of the impaired persons.

Meet President Allison
Image

Allison  Peart is the Country Manager for Ernst and Young, and the 54th and first female President of the Rotary Club of Kingston. She has embraced the  International Theme this Rotary year which is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”.

The Major Project 2013/2014  is the Junior Achievement Biztown project which will bring an economic curriculum  “To Life”. This project will allow grade 5 students to combine in-class learning with a real life experience at a fully interactive simulated town facility where they will run businesses for the day.  The students will also be exposed to the community and its economy, financial literacy, work readiness as well as business management.  Rotary volunteers and Rotarians will be enlisted to assist with other Junior Achievement youth entrepreneurial projects since every Rotarian, regardless of classification, is a businessperson. As such President Allison plans to engage the Rotarians  and volunteers  to change the lives of youths in Jamaica.

The Major Project this year, with the leadership of President Allison also embodies the Rotary District theme,  “Building our Future with Vision”. This is clearly demonstrated as the Major Project 2013/2014  will be an investment in the youth of Jamaica.

In addition to this year’s Major Project, projects and initiatives that have become synonymous with our club including the annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Treat, the Health Fairs, Roteract, Interact, Earlyact, Lunch with a Leader and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (“RYLA”) will be continued.

Let us join in supporting President Allison and her initiatives.

The next stop was a Valentine lunch-date at which the twenty-four residents of “Fr. Grenier’s Heart” were treated to a delicious fare - rice and peas, stewed chicken in garlic sauce, steamed vegetables, strawberry/apple-filled danish and cran-wata – great fellowship and well-received gifts of stress ballsPresident of the Rotary Club of Kingston, Allison Peart stated that “All members in our club - the Rotary Club of Kingston – are committed to the Rotary mantra of “Service above Self” and to help to ensure that infants and the elderly in our society are fed at least one nutritious meal every day.  Each RCOK member supported this initiative by contributing funds to cover the expenses and participating in the planning and organization of the event.  Additionally, several RCOK members turned out to help feed the children and elderly, assisting the elderly to move about and to provide fellowship with the children and the elderly at one or both events this Friday, Valentine’s Day.”

The project known as “Rotary Has Heart” - #RotaryHasHeart – set Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2014, as one single day on which Rotary Clubs from Delaware to Trinidad engage in a hunger project to change lives in their communities, especially those of children.   The Family of Rotary continually works in a multitude of ways to successfully combat hunger across neighbourhoods.

Dr Burnett Speaks on Prostate Cancer
Image

The Cancer Society spoke of its work combatting cancer in Jamaica. However, Dr Burnett's speech and Q&A regarding prostate cancer, its treatment and causes was very enlightening. Arthur L. Burnett, II, MD is Professor, Department of Urology, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he is also Director of the Basic Science Laboratory in Neuro-urology. Currently, Dr. Burnett holds professional appointments at the Johns Hopkins Hospital including Director of the Male Consultation Clinic and clinician-scientist at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. Dr. Burnett received his undergraduate degree in biology from Princeton University and subsequently his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency in surgery, and subsequently residency and fellowship in urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Upon completion of his urology residency, he also received an American Foundation of Urologic Disease New Investigator Award to continue research work into the regulatory mechanisms of penile erection. He has maintained an active laboratory in neuro-urology since that time.

Dr. Burnett is an established expert in the areas of: prostate cancer; lower genitourinary tract malignancies (penile, scrotal, and urethral cancers); lower genitourinary tract reconstruction (pelvic trauma and urethral stricture disease); erectile dysfunction and penile abnormalities (including Peyronie’s disease); and female urology (including urinary incontinence, urethral abnormalities, and prolapsed pelvic structures). This expertise is built on academic studies regarding the surgical anatomy of the pelvis, advances in surgical techniques of genital and pelvic reconstructive surgery, and basic science research contributions in the fundamental aspects of pelvic organ function.

His focus in the clinical practice of prostate cancer is reflected by his performance of over 2,000 radical prostatectomy surgeries, his application of a single, minimally invasive 3 inch incision just above the pubic bone which facilitates rapid recovery and cosmesis, his application of the “nerve-sparing” technique as described by Walsh, and his development of management approaches to improve postoperative functional outcomes following radical prostatectomy (see Erection Rehabilitation after Radical Prostatectomy).

RCOK’s LUNCH WITH A LEADER (LWAL) PROGRAMME 2013-14

ImageOVERVIEW

The LWAL programme seeks to identify worthy young persons who will be invited to a regular RCOK Lunch Meeting, to interact with Rotarians and be addressed by a Leader Guest (LG) on what Leadership means to him or her.

STAGING

The event will be staged one per month, commencing September 2013, and involve nine (9) participants – eight youth and one LG. The young persons will be Interactors, Rotoractors, University students, Youth Club members and any person recommended by RCOK members.

We should immediately commence the process of identifying and establishing a database of participants for September and the ensuing months.

Each participant will be introduced to the Club by a Committee member – a one-minute BIO and two-minute BIO for the Leader Guest.

Participants will be responsible for arriving and departing the meeting venue.

Each Committee member will be responsible (on a rotational basis) for the staging of the event each month. Please remember that we are executing within a time frame that will allow all the other regular agenda items including a Guest Speaker.

SPONSORSHIP OF LUNCH

We will solicit firms to sponsor the lunches for the participants. The cost for each month is (9x1500) $13,500. I think we should try to target (5) firms to sponsor two (2) successive months - $27,000. PP Chris Issa’ firm has committed to sponsoring the lunches for September and October 2013. Hopefully we will need only four (4) more firms.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE

PP Chris Issa has volunteered to provide a Certificate of Attendance for each participant – 80 youth and 10 Leader Guests. These will be signed and presented by President Allison, Directors Joylene and Robert.

There were representatives from Belgium, Japan, United States, Columbia, India, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Spain, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, Nigeria, Panama, Costa Rica, Norway and Ghana.

The guest speaker for the day was the Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Yuri Lopez. He recognized the RCOK as the founding service club in Jamaica and took note of the acceptance of women in the Club noting the relevance of the recent passing of International Women’s day and recognizing the service that women play in the diplomatic world. He went on to point out that the excellent turn out of the Diplomatic Corp at the meeting showed the interest they all had interacting with the local community. Fellowship, cooperation and internationalism are important, as it was with the crafting of the United Nations Charter that urged the practice of tolerance and living together for the economic advancement for all peoples. He noted that international cooperation should lay the foundation for the future and encouraged members of the Diplomatic Corp to play a role in making the spirit of cooperation glow in Jamaica.

After his presentation, he was invited to join Indian High Commissioner and Miss Jamaica World to cut the International Day Cake which was served for desert. Members of the Club and the invited guests then took a group picture at the front of the hotel to commemorate the occasion.

In bringing greetings on behalf of the Club, President Allison indicated that the 2013-14 theme of Rotary International - "Engage Rotary....change Lives" was in sync with teh Church's theme for the day "Touching lives, Transforming communities". Thereafter she made a donation to the church on behalf of RCOK to Snr Pastor Rev Astor Carlyle who went on to deliver a stirring sermon. Following the church service, RCOK Rotarians and their families were treated to a sunptuous brunch at the Pegasus Hotel hosted by President Allison. A great start to the New Year!!!

Grenier’s Heart, the twenty-five residents of the Ozanam Home for the Aged.

Thanks to RCOK Rotarians, lots of Valentine cheer and joy were brought to thirty-six of “Rev. Pusey’s Angels" as they received their breakfast trays filled with many healthy goodies - milk, water, cheese sandwiches, fruit and cupcake - and naturally some Valentine lollipops!  The 'Angels' and Rotarians also engaged in a wonderful sing-a-long as well as morning prayers led by Rotarian Rev. Nigel Pusey.

Rotary Club of Kingston's Church Service and Brunch
Image

Rotarians and their families from the Rotary Club of Kingston (RCOK) turned out in their numbers at the Webster Memorial United Church in Half-Way-Tree on Sunday, January 12, 2014 as the RCOK heralded in the New Year on a spiritual note. President Allison along with several members of the club an their families, welcomed 2014 quite fittingly in the presence of District Governor Jeremy Hurst and his wife Michelle, who were visiting from the Cayman Islands.
