Rotaract and Interact Clubs
Rotary places great emphasis on young people in the society- hence the sponsorship of Rotaract and Interact Clubs.
Rotaract Clubs consist of young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years. They are either institution or community based clubs are required to carry out projects and conduct their affairs similar to that of a Rotary Club.
The Rotary Club of Kingston sponsors one such club- The Rotaract Club of Kingston which is community based.
Interact Clubs promote the ideal of Service Above Self amongst students in high schools who are required to complete a project for the school, community, country and international. They are encouraged to interact with students from other clubs. A training seminar for Presidents Elect (PETS) is put on at the beginning of each school year and a club assembly is held in March at which Leadership Skills, Family Relationships, Character values and ideas which make a club successful are expressed. Highlight: The Rotaract Club of Kingston
The Rotaract Club of Kingston is one of the few community based Rotaract clubs in the island, and was in fact the first Rotaract club to be established in Jamaica having received its charter in June 1968. This pride of place, complimented by dedicated members has seen the club grow significantly in membership and service especially in recent years.
Rotaract Kingston members consist of young men and women who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities. The club has been active in assisting in many socially uplifting programs, inclusive of outreach to HIV/AIDS victims as well as informing the public about the effects of the virus.
Promoting literacy in the Jamaican society is another mandate of the Rotaract Club of Kingston and is best highlighted in its annual project- The Inter- Home Spelling Bee competition. This competition is held each year and brings together less fortunate children who compete in a Spelling Bee formatted in similar manner to the National Spelling Bee competition.
The club plays a vital role in District activities and is looked upon as the premier Rotaract Club in District 7020. Many Rotarians in the Kingston Club have the pride of place of being past Rotaractors. Of special note is the Past President of the Rotary Club of Kingston (2005- 2006) Rtn. Steve Wedderburn.
